Old Mercs are so much classier than their current lineup.

So true.

I still want a W126 more than I want any newer Benz.

I ’m more of a W140 guy... but it still holds true that both looks like they have the ability to call an air strike. That’s the proper look of a Merc.

For me the r107 sl’s like the one above and the 70s S class gen (idk the chassis code) are some of my favorites. Tops tho would be a 280 pagoda sl. Any Benz with those color matched hubcaps is an immediate hnnnggg moment for me lol. Or a 190 e with a stickshift would be pretty cool too

I’m a manual transmission die-hard, still DDing one in my late-model minivan. I have driven several MBs with manuals, from old 240Ds to SLKs. It pains me to say this, but don’t bother with a manual in a MB - it’s an unrewarding experience. I think the best thing I’ve read about the subject described it as stirring a broom handle in a bucket of ice cubes.

Now if it’s a 3rd-party conversion it might be OK. Tavarish’s SL55 with a manual conversion is probably going to be pretty good (the trans came from a BMW ). And out in the wild there’s at least one 500E converted to a manual. But from the factory? Fuggedabouttit...

I agree in general tbh. Driving benz’s is what made me eventually come to appreciate automatics more cause I worked as a lot guy and with a guy that restored older Benz cars so I’ve driven a fair amount of old and new. I have to say though that I’ve driven an slk with a manual and it was pretty solid, and aside from that I really wouldn’t want it in anything but a pagoda sl, 50s race car Benz, or the 190e cossie specifically because those just really get me going. That car to me would just be so much fun. I love old bmws as well, I own an e34 and a z3, and haven’t owned a Benz because I like driving manual but that car would tick all the boxes for me
